Using a Business Writer
You've hired a business writer because you need to leverage your time or you just don't like to write. Maybe you know you need something written but are just not sure what to say. Here are some tips for working effectively with a business writer:
- Provide information: Start by talking about your needs. Who are you writing for, and what are you trying to accomplish? What's your timeframe and budget? How do you envision the finished piece? Give facts and viewpoints on your company, the product or service, and your target audience. Pass on anecdotes that illustrate your points. Expect a lot of questions.
- Use the writer to help you think: A good business writer is a communications consultant. Use them that way. You and your staff know the substance, but the writer knows how to structure a piece to pull people in and hold their interest. If you're not sure what you want to say, let the writer know. A good business writer will help you figure out how to reach your target market in an honest, open way.
If you are sure you know what to say, leave room for movement. Your writer may have another perspective that's worth considering. Take advantage of a writer's analytic skills to realize their full value.
- Recognize where you are needed: To leverage your time effectively, invest a little. Depending on project needs, you may want to tell people the writer will be calling or you may prefer to set up interviews. Make sure the interviewees know what the project is about. If the project involves products or concepts under development, you may want to participate in some interviews.
Experienced business writers can work with ambiguity and lack of consensus within a project team. When views are too divergent, however, it may be impossible to craft an effective message. If a writer tells you a clearer voice is needed, you may need to step in and make a decision about the message you want to convey.
Following these tips will make working with a business writer more productive and enjoyable, and help ensure that you get writing that gets to the heart of your communication needs.
